Data & Storage
Everything is stored locally on your device — notebooks, recordings, transcripts, all of it. We have zero access to your content. If you enable cloud backup, your data goes to your personal iCloud or Google Drive account, which only you control.
You need cloud backup enabled before switching devices. On your old device, make sure iCloud or Google Drive backup is on in Settings. On your new device, sign in to the same cloud account, enable the same backup provider, and tap "Restore from Cloud" in Settings. If you didn't have backup enabled on your old device, there's unfortunately no way to transfer your data.
Unfortunately, no. Deletions are permanent — there's no trash or recently deleted folder. This is why we strongly recommend enabling cloud backup. If you had cloud backup on, your data might still be in your iCloud/Google Drive, but the app will have already tried to delete it there too.
Cloud backup is manual — you tap "Backup to Cloud" in Settings when you want to save your notebooks to iCloud or Google Drive. This gives you control over exactly what gets backed up. Your local device is always the "source of truth." To get data onto a new device, you restore from the cloud. It's not real-time sync between devices.
AI Features
Yes! Transcription runs entirely on your device using Whisper AI. The first time you use it, the app downloads a ~488MB model, but after that it works completely offline. Your audio never leaves your device for transcription.
No, those require an internet connection. When you generate a summary or AI flashcards, your transcript is sent to our servers (which use OpenAI) for processing. The results are returned and stored locally on your device. We don't keep your content on our servers.
Transcription quality depends heavily on audio clarity. Background noise, the speaker being far from the mic, multiple people talking over each other, or very quiet recordings will all hurt accuracy. For best results, place your device close to the speaker in a relatively quiet environment.
AI does its best to read your handwritten notes, but messy handwriting, complex diagrams, or unclear layouts can cause it to miss things. For best results, write clearly and keep important concepts legible. You can always edit or add flashcards manually after generation.
Flashcard generation is limited to 10 pages at a time. Processing more pages would take too long and cost too much in server resources. For longer notebooks, generate flashcards in batches — select different page ranges and generate multiple times.
Every AI summary and flashcard generation costs us money — we pay OpenAI for each request. The $1.99/month subscription covers normal usage, but unlimited requests would be unsustainable. 100 requests per month is plenty for most students. The limit resets at the start of each calendar month.
Purchases & Subscriptions
Go to Settings and tap "Restore Purchases." Make sure you're signed into the same Apple ID you used for the purchase. If it still doesn't work, restart the app completely and try again. Still stuck? Email us with your purchase receipt.
PRO ($6.99 one-time) unlocks unlimited notebooks, unlimited recording, and transcription. AI Features ($1.99/month) adds AI-powered summaries and flashcard generation. Transcription is included in PRO and runs on-device. AI summaries require the subscription because they use cloud servers that cost money to run.
No. Any flashcards you've already generated stay on your device forever. You just won't be able to generate new AI flashcards or summaries. Your existing content is always yours.
Subscriptions are managed by Apple, not us. Go to Settings > Your Name > Subscriptions on your device. You keep access until the end of your current billing period.
Troubleshooting
Probably not. The app auto-saves every few seconds while you're working. After a crash, reopen the app and your notebook should be there with your recent changes. If something does seem missing, it would only be the last few seconds of work before the crash.
Make sure your Apple Pencil is properly paired in your iPad's Bluetooth settings. Try unpairing and re-pairing it. We fully support Apple Pencil pressure and tilt. Generic third-party styluses often don't support pressure sensitivity.
Large notebooks with many pages or complex drawings take time to export. Make sure you have enough free storage on your device. If it keeps failing, try exporting just a few pages at a time instead of the whole notebook. Restarting the app can also help clear up memory issues.
Recordings are saved as M4A files locally. If a recording didn't save, check if your device has enough storage space. Also make sure you tapped the stop button to end the recording properly — if the app was force-closed during recording, the file may not have been finalized.
